Hint: It's not the bedroom.

When it comes to having sex outside of the home, Americans aren’t short of ideas. From joining the mile-high club to having sex in another country, nearly half of over 2,000 adults fantasize about getting busy in locations beyond the bedroom, according to a recent survey by sexual wellness brand Lovehoney. The study continues with their most sought-after locations to do the deed and why.
But first, what makes getting it on in a new location so thrilling? According to Justin Lehmiller, Ph.D., a research fellow at The Kinsey Institute and the author of Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How It Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life, people tend to get bored when sex becomes too routine. By breaking up sexual patterns, say, getting it on in an unusual spot, you’re engaging in an easy way to bring back the spark in an intimate setting. Similarly, having sex in public adds an element of taboo with the thrill of getting caught, which can increase the intensity of your sex life. People tend to desire sexual encounters in locations that promise certain atmospheres. Usually, these scenarios are more romantic, like sex on the beach or under the stars, to evoke passion and enhanced pleasure, says Dr. Lehmiller.
Since sex outside of the bedroom elicits new emotions, it comes as no surprise that partners are more open to experimentation. According to the study, 46% of respondents are interested in trying new positions, 30% are open to incorporating sex toys, and 28% are down to exploring kinks. This could be the result of the 36% who expressed deepened relaxation outside of the pressures of the bedroom and the 34% whose partners just all-around seem more comfortable experimenting in newfound locations.
As for which locations are most popular, international destinations join us at third on the list for sex hot spots, with 40% of respondents daydreaming about sex in Italy, 35% envisioning getting it on in France, and 23% imagining a sexscepade in Spain. For those unable to hop on a plane, local attractions for dream sexual encounters include the shower (46%), the beach (43%), and the pool (32%), which shows there’s definitely something sensual about being around water that makes people eager to experiment.
