There once was a time when using sex toys with a partner was considered taboo, but recent data shows those days are behind us. According to a new survey by sex toy retailer Ella Paradis, 61% (around 800) of 1,330 Americans ages 18-54 purchase adult novelties for themselves and their partners.
On top of that, 41% say they use them during sex in addition to solo sessions.
Since findings follow a six-month period of self-isolation and social distancing to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, it’s possible all that time spent indoors and with a significant other has heightened the need to experiment — which, if you ask us, should never depend on a pandemic.
Of the total surveyed, 12% say they haven’t made their sexual needs a priority — shocking, considering 98% report sexual pleasure as an important aspect of overall sexual health. This falls in alignment with the surge in sex toy sales since stay-at-home orders were first enacted in mid-March and could explain the 23% who buy sex toys purely for themselves, as well as the 11% who purchase them solely for their S.O.
Still, 30% rely on sex toys for just masturbation, while 28% only use them during sex. Either way, sex toys have been on a steady incline since the pandemic, and finally, it seems couples feel confident using them together.
